Many of us assigned several topics to write on when we are studying in the university. Sometimes, as far as I talk about my personal experience, it becomes challenging for me to write my essay before the deadline. As I was a student a few years ago and writing an essay or research paper time and again in order to complete the assignments on time was burdensome. On the other hand, I would like to mention here that sometimes when I was running out of time, I hired a professional writer so that my grades must not be affected by late submission. Moreover, I often struggled while writing because writing is a skill and fleshing out expressions and thoughts in a meaningful way is an art. It requires time to become a top-echelon professional writer. Neither it is a skill that can be learnt at once nor requires a cup of coffees to write a top-notch article overnight. You have to spend time. As Larry L. King, a famous novelist said and I quote “Write. Rewrite. When not writing or rewriting, read, I know of no shortcuts.”
The primary reason for writing this article is to highlight the basic structure of an essay. I have noticed that a large number of students despite having a firm grip on vocabulary struggle while completing the assigned tasks. The main reason for them to fret is that they do not know about the basic structure of essay writing. Therefore, it is an utmost responsibility of a writer whether at beginner level or at professional level, to understand the fundamental rules of writing an essay. Here we go with those basic rules.
- a) Knowing the Topic
As I mentioned above, some students despite having great writing skills struggle a lot while writing an essay. Sometimes, they fail miserably to write even a single word. Confronting this kind of situation is one of the worst experiences while writing a research paper or an essay. The reason behind this situation is not having a better understanding of the assigned topic clearly. The students do not spend time on brainstorming and ultimately they fail to express the ideas about the topic in a significant way. Therefore, always put your head down, free your mind and commence thinking about the topic. Jot down all the points which come to your mind. Use your brains accordingly and only then you will be able to write a handy essay. The common mistake which students make is they start writing without storming their brain and as a result, mingle their ideas respectively.
- b) Thesis Statement:
Once you know about the topic clearly, start expressing your thoughts. Begin writing by introducing the topic concisely. It must compose a maximum of two lines. Impart the meaning clearly and define the assigned topic straightway such that it must grab the reader's attention and urge him to read the full article. In order to develop interest of a reader (in your case is your teacher), you can start the introduction by raising a question or by mentioning a quote or an amazing piece of information in the form of a number of facts. This statement is known as a “thesis statement”.
- c) Body of essay:
Body of an essay is the second section of essay writing. A body is that part of an essay in which a writer gets a room to elaborate the topic in detail and get enough space to impose his point of view on others with logical examples, facts and figures. Raising an argument and then supporting it by different examples depending upon the nature of the topic. It is the lengthiest section of the essay.
- d) Conclusion:
Concluding the whole discussion in this last section is an art and is the most important part among all other sections of essay writing. A student has to Restate the thesis statement and take a clear stance about the topic by writing the closing and final remarks about the given statement.
I hope this article will help you in understanding the basic structure of essay writing.
